Invisible Children Book Drive

Posted by Sarah Avery On November - 30 - 2009

There are children in the country of Uganda, Africa who are so unfortunate as to have to live in such a war-stricken place. So, a book drive was held to help out these children and hopefully make even a small difference in their lives. The book drive involved anyone and everyone willing to get involved and the only action required to help out was to donate an old book or two.

“The books that we raise will be resold through BetterWorldBooks.com and the money raised will go to rebuild Uganda”, said Natalie Neville, president of the Invisible Children club. In Uganda, some money raised has helped to build fourteen schools already, where the dorms are safe and secure for the locals.

When asked why students should participate in this book drive, English teacher Ms. Hunsucker said, “Because I think students should be world aware.” Such a book drive would help students to be world aware and learn what’s going on in parts of the world, such as Africa.

Yet, these Invisible Children are still unseen by many in the world today and the organization works to raise awareness of the conditions of Uganda and more importantly, help these children.

As best said by Natalie Neville, “Knowledge is power and power is strength, and the people of Uganda need strength against the LRA.”

On November 6th 2009 the horror, Sci-Fi, thriller, The Fourth Kind, came to theaters.  The movie featured the actors Milla Jovovich, Will Patton, Enzo Cilenti, Elias Koteas, Daphne Alexander, Tyne Rafaeli ext.

The movie features several  witnesses and  their accounts of being visited by alien figures.  All of the witnesses  share  identical details, which are investigated throughout the film.

“The movie was really unnecessary. It was kind of like watching people with epilepsy having seizures all of the time. ” Said junior Jesse Carrillo . “The movie did not live up to my expectations. It only scared me once, but it didn’t scare me, it just made me jump. I didn’t have a favorite part, the ending was my favorite part. I would not see it again, no thank you. I’ll pass.”

“I didn’t really like me movie. It didn’t scare me and it was too long because it was kind of boring. It also was just too much. I wouldn’t recommend anybody to see it.”  Said junior Courtney Franz. “Save your money. “

Posted by Shanice Carter On November - 30 - 2009

Out of all of the restaurants to go and eat whether it be , takeout, sit-in, or to go, everybody has their favorite location to go and dine.

Some students prefer a meal that is not so quick.

My favorite restaurant is Cheese Cake Factory I eat there regularly.”  Said junior Aaron Drew. “I like it because that have good food and its a nice place, the service is nice. I usually order orange chicken and calamari but I do not eat cheese cake, I cant, I’m allergic.

Some students like their food fast.

“I like Taco Bell. I like the Taco salad there. I try all different things from their.” Said junior Megan Jordan. “They used to have a chicken bowl and it had all rice at the bottom and a salad at the top. They don’t have it anymore but it used to be my favorite. Sometimes I would go in the middle of the night but I don’t go that much anymore.”

Music is in the class

Posted by Shanice Carter On November - 30 - 2009

After the bell rings and the halls go silent sometimes music can be herd in the halls. In fact it is becoming increasingly popular and normal for teachers to play music during class.

Many studies say that playing music while students work in class helps  in many ways including increased ability to memorize, and  enhanced concentration.

“I usually play music at the beginning of class when the students are doing seat work.”  Said American history teacher Johnnie Eames. ” It seems to have a calming effect. I play the stations 104-7 or 107-3.

Psychology teacher Peter Fuentes said, “I play a variety of music during class. Classical, country, rock, quite a variety. Studies show that some students are very musical rhythmic as far as intelligence and it helps them remember. I play music in class whenever the opportunity arises and I’ve also written songs that go along with my lessons.

Both teachers agree that music in class is beneficial to the students learning environment.

Sarah Palmonka, a sophomore and a close friend of Haley’s said, “We celebrated her birthday on Friday and brought her cake and balloons.”

After Haley’s birthday I got a chance to get some more information about her big day. “I had an amazing birthday. I don’t think this is our lucky day. We don’t stand a chance!”

The Bloomingdale Bulls and Brandon Eagles battled it out and the game ended with a final score of 48-0, favoring Brandon.

Many people still enjoyed the game despite the loss. “Its not about coming to the football games to win. I come to hang out with my friends and cheer on our football team and band. Even if we don’t win the game,” said Mattie Edwards. Kara Licouse agreed, “I love coming to football games! All my friends are there and its really the one time I get to hang out with everyone at once!”
