In Mrs.Mejias’s Spanish 5 class, students were assigned the task of speaking in front of their classmates, describing themselves, for an entire minute. Now, this may sound quite simple, but for many kids, it sounded near impossible since they had only been taking Spanish classes for a few years.
Junior Dominique Celerin was, “Nervous at first, but once I listened to a few others go before me, I knew I could do it as long as a spoke very slowly.”
Techniques like these were a dime a dozen on the day of the speaking, and besides a few shy students whose voices shook with every phrase and sentence, the students were surprisingly successful at their first Spanish speech.
The speeches ranged from what they like to do over the weekends, to how many siblings they had. A few could even get by with a thorough description of themselves.
“It turns out, I can talk about myself just as easily in Spanish as Ican in English!” said junior Sasha Saigol after receiving a passing grade the next day.
