Ms. Camichos’s Class Creates United Nations Projects

Posted by Andrew Forest On October - 9 - 2009

According to most freshmen, AP Human Geography was one of the hardest classes to take and was a college course. It required lots of studying and  cooperation, making it week number six into the school year when their first group project was assigned. For the students of Ms. Lisa Camichos’ class, this would take research, time, and lots of creativity.

The project required a setup, whether on paper or through a powerpoint, that appealed to the United Nations for aid to their specific region of the world, with examples such as it being war torn, struck by natural disasters or having severe famine.

” I did a project on the Turkish immigrants in Germany, and it went very well, ” said freshman Travis Bird.

Travis’s group assignment and many others were extremely successful in showing and educating the other students on what went on outside of America, leaving Ms.Camichos speechless.

“Oh, I was very pleased [with the projects],” she said. “I was awed at [the students'] creativity as a whole.”

Vietnam History Projects

Posted by Andrew Forest On October - 2 - 2009

One of the most popular social studies electives offered here was the History of the Vietnam War course, taught by Mr. Johnnie Eames during 8th period.

Assigned to the students was a project about a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, or a veteran that was still alive today. The Medal of Honor assignment instructed the student to look up various information about its owner’s age, reason for earning the award and division. The oral project consisted of sending a packet of questions to a veteran and composing a narrative based on his answers.

“The projects have turned out very well so far,” said Mr. Eames. “The students find it very interesting.”

Six students were doing the interview and 17 doing the Medal of Honor project, including freshman Kurt Buehler.

“My Medal of Honor recipient is Phil G. McDonald, and I’ll try to do my best on the project,” he said.

There were two due dates for the oral draft, one for the rough copy and the other for the final, which was due December 11, 2009.

Guest speaker in Mr. Cummings History of the Middle East class

Posted by Jeff Jolly On September - 3 - 2009

This Tuesday Mr. Cumming’s history of the Middle East class had a guest speaker, Col. Greer. Through a PowerPoint presentation Col. Greer discussed many things about what was happening over seas. “It was a really good presentation that I think really helped my students understand things better,” said teacher Mr. Cummings. Col. Greer discussed a lot with the class such as the military’s involvement in the Middle East, Central Command’s job, And how the U.S military was helping keep things right with the World Markets. “Col. Greer was a cool guy that really knew what he was talking about and helped me get things I had been confused about,” explained senior Jonathan Roby. Everyone seemed to enjoy Col. Greer’s presentation and really seemed interested in the topic, and lets face it, who wouldn’t want to listen to someone talk about things happening in the Middle East instead of doing classwork?
