First half day gives everyone a break

Posted by Darius Mack On September - 21 - 2009

half day 012September 2 was the first early release day of the school year.

Students looked forward to early release days to do other activities they enjoy that they would usually not be able to do after school because of lack of time.

“I’m excited to leave school early,” said freshman Taira Zavala. “I’ll have extra time to talk on the phone with her friends. And I’m also glad to have a little break after an exhausting first week of school.”

Photography teacher Ms. Heather Hanks said, “I was glad to finally have the chance to catch up on extra paperwork and grading.”

Turtle Anyone?

Posted by Amanda Brodeur-Orozco On September - 4 - 2009

There’s a turtle in need of a new home, and fast!  Sophomore, and owner, Hailee Johnson is moving away soon and is searching for someone responsible who will take in her young red-eared slider, “He’s playful and runs around,” she tells us.  He is medium sized for his species right now, about three inches in diameter.  Red-eared sliders are omnivorous, they eat plants, insects and fish.  They have specific light and heat requirements and they need a tank big enough to swim and rest in.  This may run into a little money so if you’re considering adopting him you should make sure you have sufficient funds and do your research first, Hailee wants him to go to a good, loving home that will take proper care of him.  If you’re interested in the red-eared slider and you know for a fact that you have enough room and money to support him then contact Hailee ASAP.

The “Jitter” Bug

Posted by Sarah Avery On September - 2 - 2009

Back to teachers, old and new, back to books, back to friends. Summer was officially over for students, at least as they knew it. For many students it was exciting, but freshmen were nervous.

For many students, choosing a lunch table was one of the most nerve-wracking and important decisions of the year. With the pressure of choosing the right friends for the year, how many people to sit with and the option of possible rejection at your chosen table, there was more than enough to be worried about.

“I was nervous about lunch,” freshman Taira Zavala said. ”I didn’t want to sit by myself.”

“The thought of upperclassmen kinda scared us,” freshman Darius Mack said.

As Taira and Darius soon found out, the older students did not shove younger students into lockers or trash cans around the school. Fortunately for those freshmen, the zero-tolerance bullying policy kept the halls safe.

So, now that school had officially begun, freshman fears changed from friends to first tests and quizzes. The first day of school “jitter” bug was one that many had caught and future generations would not get rid of any time soon.

Two students perform in “Mr. Nobody”

Posted by Alex Valesano On September - 2 - 2009

On August 27 and 28, Paige Snyder and Kerstyn Carpenter performed in a local play called Mr. Nobody. Mr. Nobody was a existentialist black comedy play about a boy named Silo. This play told about how he has been taken advantage of his whole life and how he dealt with it.

Paige Synder played Cheryl and Lenny.”it was so much fun getting to play the charcters and performing on stage.” Paige told me. Kerstyn Carpenter was the stage manager and she even directed a couple of scenes. They rehearsed in Ybor from 8:00 to about 6:00. “My favorite part would have to be getting to help out backstage with friends.”Kerstyn explained. The 3rd show was unplanned. So many people showed up for the second showing that they had to tell them to come back right after for a 3rd showing!
